- Department of Chemistry, Government Science College, University of Jabalpur, Jabalpur 482001 Manuscript received 24 September 1976, accepted 17 March 1977 Titrimetric procedures, with a visual or potentiometric control of the end point, are described for the determination of mercaptans with iodine monochloride, iodine trichloride, iodobenzene dichloride and N-bromosuccinimlde in a mixed solvent of acetonitrilemethanol, and with iodine cyanide, diacetoxy iodobeozene and chloramine-T in acetic acid-methanol. Dithiocarhamates and xanthates are determined with iodine monochloride, iodine trichloride and iodohenzene dichloride in acetonitrilemethanol. Non-aqueous solutions of the oxidizing agents are stable. The procedures are rapid and accurate to 0.1% with a precision of 0.2%. Hydrogen sulphide and thiocarbonyl compounds interfere. Methanol accelerates the oxidation which is otherwise slow in anhydrous acetic acid or acetonitrile. A molecular complex that is formed in the latter solvents is supposed to be broken by methanol.
