- Department of Chemistry, University of Allahabad, Allahabad Manuscript received 27, February 1976; accepted 14 June 1976 Kinetic study of oxidation of isobutyric acid by cerium (IV) in aqueous solutions of nitric acid shows that the reaction follows first order kinetics in both Ce(IV) and isobutyric acid and the overall reaction order ascertained is two. Effects of hydrogen ions concentration, temperature and ionic strength of the medium have been examined in details. Ionic strength and nitrate ions have negative effects on reaction rate which is independent of the concentration of hydrogen ions. A suitable mechanism consistent with the kinetic results has been suggested. Activation parameters have also been computed.
