  • Introduction: As women are frequently prescribed a wide range of drugs, assessing prescribing practices and identifying potential drug use problems is necessary. Thus, this study aims to review the drug utilisation and assess the obstetrics and gynaecology (O&G) prescribing patterns at Women and Children Hospital Kuala Lumpur (WCHKL) using the World Health Organisation (WHO) prescribing indicators. Results: Overall, 3826 prescription encounters (mean age of 33±1.41) containing 10597 drugs were analysed. The average number of drugs per encounter was 2.77. A total of 6415 (60.54%) drugs were prescribed by generic name, while 8810 (83.14%) were derived from the Malaysian National Essential Medicine List. The number of antibiotic-related and injection-related encounters was 448 (11.71%) and 670 (17.51%), respectively. The most frequently prescribed drug classes were the blood and blood-forming organs (n=3666, 34.59%), followed by the alimentary tract and metabolism (n=2595, 24.49%) and dermatologicals (n=1268, 11.97%). Folic acid (n=1384, 13.06%), ferrous fumarate (n=1340, 12.65%) and vitamin C (n=1233, 11.64%) were the most commonly prescribed drugs. Discussion/Conclusion: A deviation from the WHO prescribing indicators was observed for the average number of drugs per encounter, the percentage of drugs prescribed by generic name, and the use of essential drugs. Therefore, continuous and adequate monitoring of prescription writing is necessary to improve drug use in O&G patients .
