- Department of Chemistry, Nagpur University, Nagpur-440 010 Manuscript received 28 July 1977, revised 21 December 1977, accepted 17 May 1978 3'. 5' -Dimetbyl-2' -hydroxy-azobenzene-4-sulphonic acid (DMHAS) has been synthesized and characterised. Its pk has been determined by spectrophotometric and potentiometric methods. It forms 1 : 2 chelates with Pd(ll) and Cu(II) and the metal ligand stabitity constants (Log \(\beta_2\) ) as determined by Janssen's method are found to be 22.86 for Pd-DMHAS chelate and 13.81 for Cu-DMHAS chelate. The analytical applications of this reagent in the determination of Pd(II) and Cu(II) are studied.
