  • Department of Chemistry, Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra-132 119 Manuscript received 22 September 1978, revised 5 March, 1979, accepted 12 March 1979 The proton-ligand stability constants of thiodipropionic acid:(TDPA), thiodiacetic acid (TDAA) and dithiodiacetic acid (DTDAA) and stepwise formation constants of their chelates with Al(III) have been determined in aqueous medium at different ionic strengths (0.1M, 0.2M, 0.3M and 0.4M) and temperatures (25°, 35° and 45°) using Calvin-Bjerrum titration technique as modified by Irving and Rossotti. The sodium-perchlorate solution was used to keep ionic strength constant. Thermodynamic formation constants (log Kμ=0π) have been obtained by extrapolating the experimental values to zero ionic strength. The values of overall changes in free-energy ( ∆ G°), enthalpy (∆ H°) and entropy (∆ S°) accompanying the complex formation have also been reported.
