  • Chemistry Department, Faculty of Science, Mansoura University, Egypt Manuscript received 17 December 1975, accepted 26 September 1977 A new correlation between reaction rate and mechanism and medium effects in aqueous-organic solvents was proposed. This correlation was derived quantitatively and was supported by the data shown for different reactions in water-dioxane mixtures. Such a correlation has the advantage that it does not involve any acidity function but does however need precise measurements of the water ionisation constant over the full aqueous-organic solvent composition range at the different temperatures. Mechanisms of acid- and base-catalysed reactions were discussed on the basis of solvation characteristics and activity coefficient behaviour of the particular reacting substrate and transition state in the reaction. A distinction between the different groups of these reactions was also reviewed and was applied for reactions in water-dioxane mixtures.
