- Department of Chemistry, University of Calicut, Calicut University P. 0., Kerala-673 635 Manuscript received 18 December 1919, revised 30 .Tune 1980, accepted 25 August 1980 A comparative study of the kinetics and mechanism of thermal decomposition of potassium chlorate and potassium bromate catalysed by CuO and MnO2 has been made by dynamic thermogravimetry. The kinetic parameters for the processes, based on Coats-Redfern equation and mechanistic equations, have been determined. The MnO2 catalysed decomposition of KCIO3 proceeds by Mampel mechanism, while that of KBrO3 satisfies the Avrami mechanism.
