College, Kanpur-208 002 Manuscript received 13 April 1981, revised 18 September 1981, accepted 7 January1982 Metal chelates of 5-iodo-8-bydro:xyquinolino-4-(\(p\)-tolyl)sulpbonamide [IHQTS] and 5-iodo-7-cbloro-8-hydroxyquinolino-4-(\(p\)-tolyl)sulphonamide (ICHQTS) with metals like Fe(II), Co( II), Ni(ll), Cu(ll), Cd(ll) and Pb(ll) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses and ir spectra. They were screened for their antibacterial activity against gram positive bacteria S. \(aureus\) and gram negative E. \(coli\) to test the change in antibacterial activity of ligands on complexation.
