The longer wavelength band at 252-292 tun was assigned to 1Lb and CT transitions. Ionization constants, \(p\)Ka, have been determined in 60.% (v/v) ethanol-water medium at 30-±-01° and a μ of 0 1. Excellent linear correlations were obtained when \(p\)Ka values were plotted against the substituent constants, σX and σY, and against the polar substituent, σ* XC6H4 and σ* YC6H4, for substituted phenyl groups. The \(p\)Ka values have been correlated with the extended Hammett equation. Also, the effect of the proportion as well as the nature of the solvent, e.g. ethanol, isopropanol and dioxane, on \(p\)Ka were Investigated.
