- Steroid Research Laboratory, Department of Chemistry, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh-202 001 Manuscript received 12 April 1982, accepted 23 April 1983 The reaction of 5α-cholestan-6-one (I) with ethane dithiol (BF3-etherate as catalyst) provided 5α-cholestan-6-one ethylene thioketal (V). Under similar reaction conditions 3β-acetoxy-5α-cholestan-6-one (II), 3β-chloro-5α-cholestan-6-one (III) and 3β-iodo-5α-cholestan-6-one (IV) gave 3β-acetoxy-5α-cholestan-6-one ethylene thioketal (VI), 3β-chloro-5α-cholestan-6-one ethylene thioketal (VII) and 3β-iodo-5α-cholestan-6-one ethylene thioketal (VIII), respectively. Thioketal (V) on desulfurization with Raney nickel afforded 5α-cholestane (IX). The structures of these compounds were established on the basis of their spectral properties, chemical transformations and comparison with authentic samples.
