- Department of Chemistry, Osmania University, Hyderabad-500 007 Manuscript received 16 December 1982, revised 30 June 1983, accepted 3 December 1983 5-Hydroxy-8-quinolinecarboxylic acid forms coloured complexes with Fe(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) ions in 50% (v/v) ethanol-water mixture in the рH range 3.50 to 5.70. Spectral data show the formation of only 1: 2 (metal: ligand) complexes. The optimum ranges, molar absorptivities and photometric sensitivities have been established. The stepwise and overall stability constants for these metal complexes have been determined at 30 ̊ and 0.10 M ionic strength adopting the graphical extrapolation methods of Leden :and Yatsimirskii. The log β2 values are further verified employing the Harvey and Manning technique.
