  • Chemical Laboratories, Agra College, Agra-282 002 Manuscript received 20 February 1984, revised 26 December 1984, accepted 3 June 1985 Kinetics of the uncatalysed as well as the copper(II)-catalysed oxidative decarboxylation of acetic acid by S2O\(_8^2\)- ion have been investigated. In the uncatalysed oxidation the rate of S2O\(_8^2\)- decomposition is independent of acid concentration. In the copper(II)-catalysed reaction the exponents in the rate law \(-{d[S_2O_8^{2-}] \over dt}\)=k[s2O\(_8^2\)-]x [CH3COO-]y[CuII]z are x=0.8-2.0, y..0, z=0.2. Probable mechanism elucidating the role of copper(II) is suggested.
