- Department of Chemistry, University College of Science, 92 Acharya Prafulla Chandra Road, Calcutta-700 009 Manuscript received 19 March 1986, revised 19 August 1986, accepted 19 May 1987 Equilibrium study of the ternary interaction of CoII, NiII, Cull and ZnII ions with glycinate (Gly-) as the primary ligand and a few sulphonamidobenzimidazoles (BzH), viz. 2-N-benzenesulphonylaminomethylbenzimidazole (SMBzH), 2-N-benzenesulphonylaminoethylbenzimidazole (SEBzH) and 2-(1'-N-benzenesulphonylamino-3'- methylmercapto)propylbenzimidazole (SMPBzH) as secondary ligands, by pH-potentiometric method at 30 ± 1°, in 50% (v/v) aqueous dioxan medium and ionic strength 0.2M (NaNO3), provided evidence of formation of a variety of ternary complexes, viz. Cu(Gly) (BzH)+, M(Gly) (Bz), where M-CoII, NIII, CuII and ZnII ; and Co(gly) (H_1Bz)-, where BzH-SMPBzH. Stability of ternary M(Gly) (Bz) complexes were found to be in the order, SMPBz>SEBz> SMBz, for the Bz ligands. Effects of electronic structure of the metal ions, multidentism of the BzH ligands, nature of the donor atoms, π-electron delocalisation in the metal - ligand bonds and intramolecular ligand-ligand stacking interaction on the stability of these ternary complexes have been discussed.
