Carapace elongate, with multiple concentric oblique lateral ridges; ventral margin smooth; antennal notch present. Eyelobe without lenses. Pseudorostrum acute, 0.15 times carapace length anterior of eyelobe. Antennule unknown. Maxilliped 3 ischium not produced. Pereopod 1 basis ischium merus together longer than carpus propodus dactylus together, carpus equal to propodus, propodus longer than dactylus. Pereopod 2 carpus 3 times propodus length. Pereopods 3–4 with rudimentary exopods in female. Telson with 7–9 lateral setae, more than 0.5 times length of uropod peduncles. Adult male. Carapace similar to female, but with fewer ridges (3); antennal notch more pronounced. Eyelobe with lenses. Telson and uropods longer than in female. Remarks. This species is most similar to the species of Diastylopsis that share the concentric lateral ridges on the carapace, D. thilenuisi, D. aspratilis n. sp., and D. bicarina. However, the multiple ridges, ridges on the posterior half of the carapace and the lack of spines on the carapace serve to distinguish this species. In D. thilenuisi there are only ridges on the anterior half the carapace, while in Diastylis neozealanica the ridges are on the entire carapace. In Diastylis neozealanica, even in the adult male, there are at least three concentric ridges, while in Diastylopsis aspratilis and D. bicarina there are only two concentric ridges.
