- Caprithrips insularis Beshear (Figs 6–8) Described from USA, Georgia, this species has been recorded from Trinidad, Surinam and Australia (Bhatti 1980), and is here newly recorded in Japan. It is very similar to C. melanophthalmus in having the antennae often 6- segmented, but it can be distinguished by having the basantra membranous, the tergal craspeda with serrations, and tergite IX with long MD setae. Diagnosis. Distended body length about 1.3 mm. Body uniformly yellow. Antennal segments I–V yellow, VI pale brown; all legs yellow; prominent body setae pale. Head without ocelli, almost as long as wide, prolonged forward, dorsally with transverse striae throughout, cheeks straight. Postocular setae minute and arranged transversely. Antennae 6- or 7-segmented, segments III and IV with simple sensoria, VI longest. Pronotum slightly trapezoidal with no long setae, with transverse striae throughout, with about 20 discal setae, and 9–10 posteromarginal setae, median pair longest. Mesonotum separated from metanotum by incomplete suture, with transverse anastomosing lines of sculpture throughout (Fig. 6); mesoepimeron covered with granules. Metanotum without CPS. Prosternal ferna divided; basantra membranous, with 5–8 setae (Fig. 7). Abdominal tergites with broad posteromarginal craspeda having serrations, with transverse lines of sculpture throughout (Fig. 8); tergite IX with both anterior and posterior pairs of CPS, MD setae long and stout, reaching middle of tergite X; sternites with broad posteromarginal craspeda having serrations between setae; sternite VII without craspeda at middle. Male. General structure same as female. Abdominal tergite IX with a pair of drepanae; sternites III–VII each with a transverse pore plate anterior to antecostal line. Specimens examined. Japan: Ryukyus, Okinawa-hontou Is., Tomigusuku City, Tomigusuku Castle site park, 2 females on Poaceae, 21.ii.2015 (TUA).
