Department of Chemistry, Sambalpur University, Jyotivihar- 768 019 Manuscript received 27 December 1988, accepted 6 April 1989 Water samples collected from the river Brahmani upstream, downstream of effluent discharge point of Talcher industrial complex and effluent of the said complex from the Nandira jhor have been analysed. It has been observed that some parameters of these water samples are within the tolerance limit as specified by WHO and ISI, but many other parameters are beyond the said limit. It has been concluded that the water of the river Brahmani in this zone is fully contaminated with toxic ingredients and responsible for the health hazards of the inhabitants of this region
