The angle which the moment of SOCH3 group makes with its axis of rotation is calculated. From this angle and the group moments, the dipole moments of a number of sulphoxides are calculated and compared with the observed moments with a view to knowing the polar and steric effects of the substituents. For sulphoxides with no or tho-substitution the calculated moments are in good agreement with the experimental values. Mono· or tho-substitution by CH3 or Cl prevents free rotation of the -SOCH3 group, directing its orientation away from the substituent. For other sulphoxides the probable conformation of the groups present in the molecule is indicated.
