- Department of Chemistry, University of Delhi, Delhi-110 007 Manuscript received 4 December 1990, accepted 31 May 1991 Kinetics of the reaction between phloroglucinol and acetophenone was investigated at different temperatures (30-45°) in methanol and different hydrochloric acid concentration (0.024-0.710M) were used. The reaction was promoted using thioglycollic acid (TGA) and the functionality of phloroglucinol was also taken into account. Reaction was found to obey second order kinetics. Activation parameters were calculated. The reaction was also carried out In solvents 1,4-dioxane, ethanol and methanol. The reactions were also carried out in presence of promoters thioglycollic acid and thiophenol. Overall rate constants were resolved into stepwise rate constants.
