The rate equation, \(\nu\)=\(\kappa\) [sulphide)[oxidant] was found to be valid. The observed substituent effect is explained by an electrophlllc attack of PDC oxygen on sulphide, leading to a polar transition state. The reaction did not induce polymerisation of acrylonitrile. Addition of MnII decreased the rate considerably indicating the Involvement of transient species. Decomposition of the complex formed between the sulphide and oxidant was assumed as the rate-determining step. On the basis of the results, a suitable mechanism has been proposed.
