  • Identifying the root cause of this religious-nuanced conflict is a difficult task. From some Indonesian cases, it seems that the cause of the conflict was a religion that is degraded, and because of its degradation state, it allowed violence act, and the excess of such violence was community segregation. Nevertheless, we can pursue other questions to reveal what was wrong. In what sense is a religion being degraded and come to the point to allow violence? And what is the religion in his mind? What kind of religion is at work? This paper could not provide an immediate answer to the above questions and does not pretend could identify the root cause of religious conflict if it means a clear-cut answer. There are many analyses discussing such issues and this paper does not pretend to be more exhaustive and novel in dealing with it. I want to try to recognize the problem by attending to the people experiencing the conflict, notably in the context of Poso (Sulawesi Island) 1998‐2002 and Ambon (Moluccas Islands) 1999‐2000 conflict, especially through the inter‐faith encounters organized by Interfidei in two occasions and a series of interview with Poso refugees.4 Their views might be limited in terms of the scope of analysis, however, I consider it extremely important because by attentively considering it we can see the religious expression at work.
