- School of Studies in Chemistry, Pt. Ravishankar Shukla University. Raipur-492 010 Manuscript received 14 September 1993, revised 4 January 1994, accepted 1 March 1994 The alkaline hydrolysis of N-phenylbenzohydroxamic acid has been studied under micellar (kΨ) and nonmicellar (kw) conditions using cationic (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, cetylpyridinium chloride), anionic (sodium lauryl sulphate), and non-ionic (Triton X-100) micellar agents. The results are explained by the pseudophase ion-exchange model. Both the cationic and anionic micelles assist the hydrolysis, whereas nonionic micelle does not affect the rate. The micellar catalysis is inhibited by added salts. Temperature and substituent effects have been studied. The mechanism of the reaction has been proposed.
