Ravishankar Shukla University, Raipur-492 010 Manuscript received 21 February 1994, revised 1 August 1994, accepted 19 October 1994 The parameters like surface area, anion content and OH- ion exchange capacity of chemically-pretreated (HCI04 and CH3COOH) hydrous zirconium(IV) oxide were determined. The sorption of aqueous 2,4-dinitrophenol and picric acid on the substrates or surface-phase pH 3.0-7.5 was four depend on pH of the substrates, time and temperature. The mechanism of sorption has been shown to be anion - exchange sorption and weak chemical interactions.
