  • Hydrolyzable tannins are widely used in animal husbandry and veterinary medicine. In feed, tannins act as natural preservatives. But in poultry farming, tannin is less popular, because according to some data, it reduces the level of productivity of laying hens. To study the effect of horse chestnut bark (tannins), 30 quails of the "Pharaoh" cross were divided into a control group (15 quails) and an experimental group (15 quails). Birds of the control and experimental groups were fed with full-ration compound feed for poultry PK 2-0 for chickens up to 7 weeks. Quails of the experimental group from the age of 10 days were given feed with the added biologically active additive of horse chestnut bark tannin at 25 mg/kg of live weight. When evaluating the productivity of quails, the following main indicators were taken into account: live weight, growth rate, sexual maturity. At the age of 40 days live weight in the control group was 254.2 g, in the experimental group 248.6 g, daily weight gain 6.27 g and 6.13 g, respectively. Quails of the experimental group had developed sexual organs by the age of 40 days, both females and males, despite the fact that representatives of the "Pharaoh" cross reach sexual maturity only by 50–56 days. Formed ovarian follicles were found in the females of the experimental group and formed eggs were found in the lumen of the oviduct, although the “Pharaoh” cross does not belong to the egg-laying one, which refutes the previously obtained data of some researchers. Our research with horse chestnut bark confirmed an adequate growth rate and early precocity. The positive effect of the feed additive "horse chestnut bark" allows further studies on its effects on other bird species.
