- School of Studies in Chemistry, Pt. Ravishankar Shukla University, Raipur-492 010, India Manuscript received 2 December 1997, revised 8 September 1998, accepted 6 October 1998 The individual forms of antimony, i.e. antimony( III), antimony(v) and total antimony in fresh ground water and in industrial effluents have been determined spectrophotometrically. The method is based on extraction of chloroantimonate(v) complex in 0.5-7.5 M HCI acid medium in the presence of a non-ionic surfactant TX-100 with N,N'-diphenylbenzamidine (DPBA) in toluene and subsequent reaction of the extracts with brilliant green (BG) at 1.0-3.0 pH. The molar absorptivity of the Sbv-CI--(TX-100)-DPBA/-BG complex in toluene is 1.83 x 105 dm3 mo-1 cm-1 at 640 nm. The detection limit of the method is 10 ppb.
