  • Lycopodium clavatum Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 2: 1101. 1753. "Habitat in Europae sylvis muscosis." RCN: 7963. Lectotype (Jonsell & Jarvis in Jarvis & al., Regnum Veg. 127: 63. 1993): Herb. Burser XX: 49 (UPS). Generitype of Lycopodium Linnaeus (vide Britton & Brown, Ill. Fl. N. U. S., ed. 2, 1:43. 1913). Current name: Lycopodium clavatum L. (Lycopodiaceae). Note: Proctor (in Howard, Fl. Lesser Antilles 2: 31. 1977) indicated 1257.2 (LINN) as type, but this is a post-1753 addition to the herbarium and not original material for the name. Although Schelpe & Anthony (in Leistner, Fl. Southern Africa, Pteridophyta: 1. 1986) stated "Type:...?Hort. Sicc. Cliff. (?BM, holo)", it is not clear that these authors accepted Clifford material as the type so this is ineffective (Art. 7.11). Jonsell & Jarvis (in Nordic J. Bot. 14: 147. 1994) provide a brief explanation of their earlier (1993) formal type choice.
