Mercury(II) center in 1 adopts a distorted trigonal bipyramidal geometry with an HgN4S chromophore. Primary N atoms of tren constitute the basal plane, and remaining tertiary amine N atom and S atom of terminal thiocyanate are in the apical positions. In the crystalline state, complexed cations and counter anions are engaged in N-H...N, N-H...O, N-H...S and C-H...N hydrogen bonds resulting in a 3D network structure.
