Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 3.&#x2014;General distribution: Southern Red Sea, East Africa, Madagascar and western Mascarenes east to Fiji and Samoa, north to Ryukyu Islands, south to Queensland (Australia). Amphibious air-breather that spends most of its time out of the water; able to meet its oxygen requirements as long as it stays wet; typically resting on mud, or rocks, with their tails dipped in the water, 0&#x2013;1 m depth.
