- Caranx melampygus Cuvier in Cuvier & Valenciennes 1833 —Bluefin trevally Status at New Ireland. First recorded from Feni Island, Namatanai District, New Ireland, by Munro (1958: 181); also reported from Ningin Island, New Ireland as Caranx stellatus by Munro (1958: 182); subsequently reported from Tigak Islands, Kavieng by Wright & Richards (1985: 73), and from from Lihir Group, Namatamai District by Fry et al. (2006: 129). Specimens observed at Kavieng fish market in 2004–2005 by Jeff Kinch during CFMDP Survey, and by Barry C. Russell on 14 and 21 June 2014. A specimen photographed at Lissenung Island by Dietmar Amon on 18 July 2008; a video of a specimen taken at Tungelo Island, off southeastern New Hanover, at 3–46 m depth, St. KR104, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell). Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2, 3, 5.—General distribution: Red Sea, East and South Africa east to Panama, north to Izu and Ogasawara islands, south to Dampier Archipelago (Western Australia), New South Wales (Australia), Norfolk Island and Rapa. Adults found on coral or rocky reefs, juveniles inshore in sandy lagoons, 0–190 m depth. Marine.
