New record of this taxon from New Ireland; previously misidentified from New Ireland as Epinephelus septemfasciatus (non Thunberg, 1793) by Kailola (1987b: 231). Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 0.—General distribution: Persian Gulf, Gulf of Aden and South Africa, Madagascar and western Mascarenes east to Marquesas Islands, north to southern Japan, south to Rottnest Island (Western Australia), New Caledonia, northern New Zealand, Kermadec Islands and Tonga. Found on rocky reefs, 150–300 m depth. Marine.
