  • The number of tillers and grain ears developing per plant in a crop are a component defining the subsequent yield of a cereal crop. Tillering ability provides an indicator of a crop’s potential to maximise yield, with fewer tillers leading to fewer ears, and thus reduced yield. Tillering is affected by a variety of factors in addition to plant variety, including light and climactic variables including temperature, water availability, fertilisation and sowing density.
