  • The collapse of a cereal stem, or lodging, occurs when the stem is no longer able to hold its own weight. All cereal varieties are susceptible to differing degrees, affecting their standing power; dwarf varieties, for example, tend to be more resistant, and as such reduction of lodging is an important attribute in plant breeding programmes. Other variables, however, including climactic conditions, soil attributes, topography, etc., combine with varietal attributes to result in lodging levels experienced in a crop in-field. Lodging increases difficulty of harvest, resulting in reduced yield. Furthermore, timing of lodging can modulate the impact on yield, grain quality, moisture levels and ripening evenness, as well as disease levels in the crop stand.
