- Abstract. The results of the Framingham study showed that even after adjusting the data for age, smoking, blood pressure (BP) and total cholesterol (CS) in the blood, the presence of diabetes mellitus (DM) increases the risk of ischemic heart disease (IHD) in men by 66% , in women - by 203% [1]. In patients with diabetes mellitus, IHD is diagnosed 2-4 times more often than in people at the same age without diabetes [2]. The results of epidemiological studies indicate that the risk of coronary complications in patients with diabetes mellitus without IHD is comparable to the risk in patients with an established diagnosis of IHD [3,4]. These statistics are reflected in the current international guidelines for the treatment of atherosclerosis. In the report of experts from the National Cholesterol Education Program in the United States [5], patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus are equated with patients with coronary artery disease in terms of the degree of risk of complications and, accordingly, according to the strategy of lipid-lowering therapy. This provision is included in the European recommendations for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases [6].
