mHealth Apps use among diabetes mellitus patients: A survey of primary health care clinics in Kinta District

- Introduction: Mobile health (mHealth) apps can aid in managing health related conditions. This study aimed to explore the usage of the MHealth apps among diabetes mellitus (DM) patients. Methodology: Cross-sectional study involving self-administration of questionnaire among Type II DM adult patients in nine Health Clinics in Kinta District, Ipoh in November 2020. Patients capable of using smart devices were included in the study after obtaining informed consent. Results: Response rate was 82.6% (295/333). Majority of the patients were female (54.9%), Malay (58.3%), married (87.8%), secondary educated (53.2%), employed (44.7%) and mean age 53.8 (SD: 12.38) years old. Hypertension (58.0%) and hyperlipidaemia (42.7%) were common comorbidities. Patients were on 8.2 years (SD: 7.01) for DM treatment. Smart devices were used for 3.6 hours (SD: 3.38) on daily basis and for social interaction (91.2%). Forty patients (13.6%) have used MHealth apps. Among users, social media (65.0%) was the influential factor. DM apps were blood sugar measurements (37.5%) and medication reminders (22.5%). Preferred features were DM reading materials (77.5%), videos (45.0%) and online interaction with healthcare professionals (35.0%). 45.0% perceived apps were very useful (45.0%) but requires assistance. Non-users were unaware about the availability of MHealth apps (70.2%) and unsure how to start (22.4%). 22.0% would like to rely on regular health follow-ups in health facilities and worried of data security (7.5%). However, 49.0% will consider using MHealth apps. Employment, multiple comorbidities and patients' awareness were significantly associated with the usage of MHealth apps (AOR>1.0, p<0.05).
