Taxonomy: Four syntypes of Tosaxyleborus pallidipennis Murayama (NMNH), a paratype of Cnestus maculatus (NHML), and the lectotype of X. pseudosuturalis (NHMW) were examined and compared. Morphological variation was observed in the size of the transparent area (which may also be solid black) on the elytra but in no other features. Both C. maculatus and C. murayamai are here placed in synonymy with C. aterrimus.
