Diagnosis. Head rather deep and downward inflected with poorly ossified opercular bones, anterior gill arch with 12–19 developed rakers on lower arm; 7–10 scales in an oblique row between origin of dorsal fin and lateral line. Distribution. Western Atlantic (Nielsen et al. 1999). Remarks. First record in Brazilian waters. Collected from several stations off Bahia and Rio de Janeiro, at depths from 266 to 1275 m. Previously known from 530 to 1010 m (Nielsen et al. 1999).
