Diagnosis. Head depth less than 60% of head length; spines on top and sides of head well developed; frontal spine above eye present; 40 or more lateral line scales to level of anus. Distribution. Tropical and subtropical areas of all oceans, at depths from 1000 to 5055 m (Nielsen et al. 1999). Remarks. First record in Brazilian waters. Collected off Bahia and Espírito Santo, from 1522 to 2271 m depth.
