- Carex brizoides, which occurs in degenrated forest communities, inhibits other herb layer components and makes it impossible to reconstruct the original species composition of the community. The aim of the research was to characterize the degenarated oak-hornbeam associations dominated by C. brizoides. Phytosocialogical surveys were carried out in the Sillesian Uplan (large forests), and the Glubczyce Plateau (woodland islands). The Shannon diversity index for eah releve was calculated. The results of PCS analyses indicate that C. brizoides is a factor limiting the cover, growth and vitality of typical forest species (Fig. 1b). It reaches maximum cover when the three layer is composed of oak, lime or birch. When the canopy is dominated by hornbeam, the abundance of C. brizoides is noticeably lower (Fig. 1a). The disturbed oak-hornbeam communities are most vulnerable to C. brizoides domination in the herb layer. It seems to be a common phenomenon and does not depend on the size of the forest but is related to disturbances.
