- Heterotropus Loew Heterotropus Loew, 1873: 180. Type species: Heterotropus albidipennis Loew, 1873. Species of Heterotropus spp. are particularly well represented in the material examined and including a new species, described below. The opportunity is also taken to provide a new key to southern African species and to describe the hitherto undescribed male of H. munroi Bezzi from a series of specimens of both sexes collected in Namibia and Botswana, preserved in BMNH. Yeates & Irwin (1992) described three new species from the Northern Cape. These are closely similar in shape, colour pattern and the characters of the genitalia; notably the aedeagus is trifid, the gonostylus has a large median arm. On the other hand H. apertus Greathead, H. diamantis described below and H. munroi all differ in important characters from the other three species suggesting that they are not closely related to them or each other.
