- The article focuses on the characteristics of some changes that take place in the Ukrainian language space of the end the XX th – the beginning of the XXI st centuries that concern the system of the language norms and its changes, the content of the language and communicative competence, rhetoric ability of a modern language personality. Certain reflections have been represented about the specificity of the mass media language, «freedom of word», a linguistic expertise, the phenomenon of carnavalization, the neutralization of functional styles of speech, azirivka, surzhyk and the others. Partial changes in the language consciousness of the Ukrainians have been analyzed as well. The transformation of the postulates of a classical rheto-ric, their modification, broadening of the metalanguage of a communicative linguistics by means of certain types of speech such as: “language chattering” (“Lingua blablativa”), “the stream of information”, the so called “wooden speech” (“Lingua de bua”), “blank retoric” etc. has been analyzed. Some tendencies of the development of Ukrainian at its present stage have been singled out. The recommendations concerning the improvement of a rhetoric ability of a modern Ukrainian have been provided.
