- The seven manuscript codices analysed in this paper are held at the Cathedral Library of Verona and cover a period of time ranging from the beginning of the V century to the mid-IX century. They are described from a physical, textual and historical perspective. One of the benefits of this approach is that additional elements can be considered, leading to a more in-depth understanding of figures such as archdeacon Pacificus and institutions like the scriptorium in Verona in the Early Middle Ages. In this respect, the study of marginalia played a central role in providing tangible evidence of reading practices. Furthermore, the description of each codex as a unique item which is more than a simple passive container reveals the history of the manuscript; it is this history that enables us to carry out a proper assessment of the codex as a witness to the work or works that it bequeaths.
