- “Citizen science” is a label attached to many approaches involving publics in research processes: participatory monitoring, community-based research, scientific crowdsourcing, biohacking and participatory action research, just to name a few (e.g., see Wikipedia). Categorizations and typologies have been developed in order to get an overview of what the term means and to differentiate between the various forms of citizen science.
