- Worldwide, the annual economic losses due to agricultural pests are estimated at billions of dollars. Practices of pest control are as old as farming itself. The chemical pesticides were a major component of the green revolution, but increasing awareness of its impact on the environment and people's health has revealed the importance of reducing the reliance on pesticides. The necessity of having a pest control method rather than a pesticide is evident. Hence great efforts have been given to have strategies and practices for pest control that are friendly to the environment and socially accepted. Biological control is believed to be a vital, healthy, and sustainable practice. It is, therefore, considered to be the most important tactic in any successful integrated pest management project. This article is intended to focus on the general concept of biological control (conventional and modern), its advantages, components, and its practices, challenges, opportunities, and promotion strategies in the Arab World.
