  • It was about a year ago that our world was turned upside down. The current COVID-19 situation and its implications on how the world approaches education and research highlighted the importance of OS. The global scientific community mobilised itself these past months – and although many publishers brought down paywalls – it made us realise the urgency with which we need to act to make Open the default since we know that swathes of information are only temporarily accessible until we return to a new normal. We have also been struck by how investments in open made over the past two decades have proven their worth this last year in particular. However, like many of the OS infrastructure that Europe has borne over the years, how financially sustainable is it, and how can we better guarantee its sustainability over time? If we are to further maintain and build on our Open Science efforts in the future, then we need to secure the underlying infrastructure that supports Open Access and Open Science or Scholarship. The need for supporting OS is not just about ‘why’ institutions should pledge but more ‘why invest now.’
