- After briefly reviewing the scientific motivations of studying old stellar populations of the Milky Way, and the contributions of UVES to this research field during the last 20 years, I discuss the importance of the ultra-violet spectral range for abundance analyses of metal-poor stars. I present a wish list for UVES upgrades, taking into account other ongoing instrumentation projects (in particular, CUBES) as well as currently-ongoing and future wide-angle spectroscopic surveys.
