  • We performed a quantitative analysis of the Amu Riverbank erosion based on the modelled river discharge using ERA5 Reanalysis hydrological data and ground station data for the Kaldar district in Balkh province of Afghanistan. This study investigates the relationship between the Riverbank erosion area and the driving parameters such as the specific stream power and the discharge intensity. Further, shoreline analysis indicates that Afghanistan is losing precious land due to Riverbank erosion over the past decade (2004-2020) amounting to as much as 86 km2 and on average 5.4 km2 every year. This dataset primarily contains the shapefiles for the watershed investigated with the Amu river channel shifting over a block period of years between 2004-2020. The shapefiles were generated using the NDWI determined from pan-sharpened Landsat imagery. Additionally, the ERA5 Reanalysis dataset used in the retrieval of the hydrological parameters and the modelling of Amu river discharge is also provided.
