  • When the electrical grid transitions from synchronous machine generation to an inverter connected renewable resources generation, the grid's stability decreases which, correlates to the lower inertia response of the grid's generation sources. This study proposes a synthetic inertia response controller for a wind turbine, which regulates the response aggressiveness based on lidar measured wind speed. When testing this controller, modeling of a frequency signal was also required. Testing that this method would be a better way to control wind turbines' synthetic inertia response, models of the turbine and the controller simulate multiple situations to test the controller's performance. In addition to analyzing measured samples of frequency time series and generating an expression to simulate frequency disturbance through Fourier transform. A frequency signal is produced and used to simulate the turbine with different rates of change of frequency levels. The proposed synthetic inertia controller has promising results. The controller has a better synthetic inertia response during emergency cases while having no sign of dramatically increasing loads, as shown by the simulations.
