  • Since the early times, use of natural resources has followed the same pattern: acquire materials, manufacture, use and dispose. Nevertheless, it is now clear that this is not a sustainable model, considering the constantly increasing demand Error! Reference source not found. and our planet’s finite resources [2]. While efficiency in use of resources and recycling have been improving, there is still more to be done. In this context, Circular Economy (CE) has come into the limelight in recent years, inspiring the transition of modern societies from the ‘take-makedispose’ model to an economy that is restorative and regenerative by design, featuring a continuous cycle that preserves and enhances existing resources while optimising their yields. In the technological front, advances in computing and networking technologies are driving the rapid expansion of the Internet of Things (IoT) landscape, with IoT-based products and services being technically and economically feasible leveraged by the 5G evolution. Billions of smart objects are already deployed today, and many more such devices are deployed daily, creating an open, global network connecting people, data, and “things”, and generating a massive potential for innovative applications and services leveraging the convergence of a consumer-business-industrial Internet. However, the realization of the IoT potential requires overcoming significant business and technical hurdles that still exist.
