- The calculation spreadsheet allows determining the Chunk Index, Breakdown Index, and the Filler Increase Index from the grading curves before and after processing of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP). Chunk Index demonstrates the size of RAP agglomerations. Small RAP chunks will ensure good blending of RAP and virgin materials in an asphalt plant. Breakdown Index demonstrates the reduction of RAP aggregate particle size during processing. It is important to avoid reducing RAP particle size because it allows more variability in the types of mixtures that can be produced. Filler Increase Index reflects the amount of generated filler content during RAP processing. A high filler content will not allow satisfying the aggregate grading curve and volumetric property requirements for mixtures containing high RAP content.
