- Recent technological advances and the multiple challenges faced by the healthcare sector are strongly motivating the adoption and development of e-Health services. In this chapter, we give a high-level framework for the design of end-to-end e-Health solutions and focus on the potential enhancements that can be achieved by the application of Network Coding (NC) techniques at the Medium Access Control (MAC) layer. After a survey of existing solutions in the literature, we present a novel MAC scheme that employs NC techniques in a cooperative sensor network. The use of NC enables bidirectional communication in an efficient way, reducing energy consumption without compromising the Quality of Service (QoS).
