Western Atlantic—USA (North Carolina to Florida), Bermuda, Gulf of Mexico, Antilles, Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil (Amapá, Pará, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Sergipe, Bahia, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul), and Uruguay. Mediterranean Sea as introduced species (Holthuis 1959; Powers 1977; Lemaitre 1981; Barros & Pimentel 2001; Bertini et al. 2004; Almeida et al. 2007b; Almeida & Coelho 2008; Melo 2008, 2010; Felder et al. 2009; Spivak et al. 2019). Remarks. Previous records in São Paulo include Ubatuba (Bertini et al. 2004), Santos-São Vicente estuary and bay complex (Pita et al. 1985; Sant’Anna et al. 2012; Zara et al. 2013). Two recent studies indicated lack of genetic structure among populations of C. danae and signs of high connectivity along the distribution (Peres & Mantelatto 2020; Peres et al. 2020).
